Victorio Edades- National Artist in Visual Arts
Victorio Edades Edades was the son of Hilario Edades and Cecilia Edades. He was the youngest of 10 children, 6 of whom died of smallpox. He received his early education in barrio schools. By 7th grade he was considered the “apprentice teacher” in art class due to his talent.
He married Jean Garrott, an American who also later taught English and drama at the University of the Philippines.
Edades traveled to the United States and enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, taking up architecture and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting. His desire to paint in modern manner developed after he attended a travel art exhibition in the U.S., featuring modern European artists such as Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and the Surrealists.
Among Edades' major works were: The Sketch, National Museum Collection, 1928; The Builders, 1928; Cultural Center of the Philippines Collection, 1928; Interaction, with Carlos V. Francisco and Galo B. Ocampo, 1935; Demoiselles Davao, 1976; Kasaysayan, a mural for a Manila bank, 1979
